St. Thomas Man Charged with Impaired Driving After Erratic Behaviour in Malahide

In a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a 21-year-old man from St. Thomas following alarming reports of erratic driving in the Township of Malahide. The incident occurred on September 2, 2025, at around 5:20 p.m., when concerned citizens alerted the police to a motorist displaying dangerous driving behaviours.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of Austin Josten, who is now facing multiple charges under the Criminal Code. The charges include operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration over 80, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

As part of the legal repercussions, Josten has been subjected to a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 7-day vehicle impoundment, measures intended to deter such reckless behaviour on our roads. He has since been released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Thomas on October 14, 2025.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of responsible driving. The OPP encourages the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of impaired or dangerous driving. A simple call to 9-1-1 could potentially save lives and prevent further incidents on Ontario’s roadways.

Impaired driving remains a significant risk on Canadian roads, with countless lives affected by the actions of those who choose to drive under the influence. The OPP’s proactive approach in responding to public concerns showcases their commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users.

Residents in the Elgin County area are urged to stay alert, and if you see someone driving dangerously, do not hesitate to report it. Together, we can work towards safer communities for all Canadians.
