Longlac Residents Arrested in Major Drug Trafficking Bust

In a significant operation that underscores the ongoing challenges of drug trafficking in Ontario, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) executed a series of search warrants in Longlac, resulting in the arrest of two local residents. The investigation was led by the Greenstone OPP Community Street Crime Unit, with assistance from the Organized Crime Enforcement Branch and the Emergency Response Team.

On August 22, 2025, at approximately 5:00 PM, uniformed officers arrived at a residence on Dieppe Road in Longlac to carry out a search warrant under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The operation yielded not only illicit drugs but also firearms and proceeds from criminal activities.

The accused individuals, Joe Nieman, a 50-year-old resident of Longlac, and Ashley Lucas, a 43-year-old also from the area, have both been charged with serious offences. Nieman faces charges of possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, specifically opioids, and possession of property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000. Meanwhile, Lucas has been charged with multiple offences under the Criminal Code.

This incident reveals a concerning trend in rural Ontario, where communities like Longlac, with a population of just over 1,000, are not immune to the challenges of drug-related crime. The OPP has emphasized the importance of community involvement in tackling these issues, urging residents to report any suspicious activities that may indicate drug trafficking or other criminal behaviour.

The Greenstone area, which includes Longlac, has seen its fair share of challenges related to substance abuse and trafficking, leading to increased police presence and community outreach programs aimed at educating the public about the dangers of illicit drug use.

Local leaders have expressed their support for law enforcement efforts to rid the community of such activities, acknowledging that maintaining safety and security is paramount for the wellbeing of Longlac’s residents. As the OPP continues its investigation, they are committed to dismantling the networks that contribute to drug trafficking in the region.

With these recent arrests, it is clear that the OPP is taking a firm stand against drug-related crime, working diligently to protect communities across Ontario. As the situation develops, residents of Longlac can expect continued efforts from law enforcement to ensure their safety and to create a healthier environment for all.
