Guelph Driver Charged with Stunt Driving After High-Speed Encounter with OPP

In a striking reminder of the importance of road safety, a 35-year-old Guelph resident was charged with stunt driving early Tuesday morning after Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers caught them speeding excessively in Wellington County. The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding reckless driving in community zones, where safety should be paramount.

On September 23, 2025, at approximately 1:45 a.m., OPP officers from the Wellington County detachment were conducting a proactive traffic enforcement initiative when they observed a vehicle traveling at a dangerously high rate of speed on Wellington Road 7, situated within Guelph-Eramosa Township.

The officers promptly initiated a traffic stop, leading to a thorough investigation. The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with several offenses, including:

  • Driving a motor vehicle while performing a stunt—specifically excessive speed in a community zone.

  • Speeding 50 km/h or more over the posted speed limit.

  • Having an entire license plate that was not plainly visible.

Under Ontario law, individuals charged with stunt driving face severe penalties, including a mandatory 14-day vehicle impoundment and a 30-day driver’s licence suspension. Furthermore, it’s crucial for drivers to be aware that fines incurred in designated Community Safety Zones can be doubled, emphasizing the province’s commitment to maintaining safer roads.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Provincial Offences Court in Guelph at a later date, where they will have the opportunity to contest the charges.

This incident serves as a stark reminder for all drivers in Ontario to adhere to speed limits and drive responsibly, particularly in areas where the safety of pedestrians and residents is a priority. With the summer months behind us and the fall season upon us, now is the perfect time for all motorists to revisit their driving habits.

The OPP continues to encourage community members to report any suspicious or reckless driving behaviors, reinforcing the message that road safety is a shared responsibility. As we move into the busy holiday season and beyond, let’s all commit to making our roads safer for everyone.
