Young Driver Charged with Impaired Driving After Traffic Stop in Callander, ON
In a recent traffic enforcement action, a young driver from South River was charged with impaired driving following a proactive stop by the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Callander. This incident underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to enhance road safety in Ontario, particularly as we head into the fall season when driving conditions can change.
At approximately 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2025, an OPP officer observed a vehicle speeding southbound on Highway 11. The driver quickly turned into the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) scales area, prompting the officer to initiate a traffic stop. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer suspected that the driver had been consuming alcohol.
Following a thorough investigation, the driver, identified as 20-year-old Trent Webster from South River, was arrested and taken to the North Bay OPP detachment for further testing. As a result of this investigation, Webster has been charged with two serious offences: operation while impaired due to alcohol and operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 mg.
In addition to the charges, Webster has received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He has since been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on November 6, 2025.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible driving, particularly in rural areas like Callander, where road safety is paramount. The North Bay OPP continues to encourage all drivers to refrain from alcohol consumption before getting behind the wheel. With the arrival of autumn, which often brings an increase in deer activity and changing weather conditions, it is crucial for all motorists to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential hazards on the road.
As the OPP works diligently to keep Ontario’s roads safe, it is essential for residents to support these efforts by adhering to traffic laws and making informed decisions when it comes to alcohol consumption. Impaired driving is a serious offence that not only endangers the driver but also puts other road users at risk. Let’s work together to promote safer driving habits across our beautiful province.
