Prohibited Driver Arrested for ATV Operation in West Nipissing
In an incident that raises concerns about road safety and adherence to vehicle regulations, a 27-year-old man from Cache Bay has been arrested by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) for operating an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) while prohibited.
On Friday, September 19, 2025, at approximately 5:50 p.m., officers from the Nipissing West Detachment were conducting routine patrols when they stopped an ATV on Riding Stable Road in West Nipissing. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the driver, identified as Wylden Ray, was a prohibited driver under the Criminal Code.
Ray’s charges are serious and reflect a blatant disregard for road safety laws, which are crucial for protecting both drivers and pedestrians. He faces multiple charges, including:
-
Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code
-
Driver - no helmet or improper helmet
-
Operating a motor vehicle without insurance
-
Failing to surrender a permit for the motor vehicle
In Canada, the importance of helmet use while operating ATVs cannot be overstated. Not only is it a legal requirement, but it is also a fundamental safety measure that can prevent serious injuries. The OPP’s enforcement actions highlight the need for all off-road vehicle operators to comply with safety regulations to ensure their well-being and that of others.
After his arrest, Ray was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in North Bay. The ATV he was operating has been impounded for 45 days, with the associated costs falling to the owner.
This incident serves as a reminder that adherence to traffic laws is essential for maintaining safety on our roads and trails. As the popularity of ATVs continues to rise across Canada, it is vital for operators to be aware of and comply with the legal requirements in place, including proper licensing, insurance, and safety gear.
The OPP encourages all off-road vehicle enthusiasts to take safety seriously and to operate responsibly. By doing so, we can help ensure that our beautiful Ontario landscapes can be enjoyed safely by everyone.
