In a concerning incident highlighting the importance of road safety, an Ottawa driver has been charged with impaired driving after the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) utilized their Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology. On September 19, 2025, just before 4:00 p.m., OPP officers from the Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) Team were alerted by an ALPR camera while patrolling Highway 417 westbound near Maitland Avenue. The notification indicated that the registered owner of the vehicle, Patrick Rooney, 60, was driving under suspension.

Upon stopping the vehicle, officers quickly suspected that Rooney might be under the influence of alcohol. Following standard procedure, a roadside screening device was employed, which confirmed the officers’ suspicions. Rooney was then transported to the Ottawa Detachment for further testing.

As a result of these findings, Rooney now faces multiple charges, including:

1. Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

2. Driving while under suspension

3. Driving a motor vehicle without a valid permit
