Ottawa Driver Patrick Rooney Charged with Impaired Driving After ALPR Alert

In a concerning incident highlighting the importance of road safety, an Ottawa driver has been charged with impaired driving after the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) utilized their Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to keep Ontario’s roads safe.

On September 19, 2025, just before 4:00 p.m., OPP officers from the Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) Team were alerted by an ALPR camera while patrolling Highway 417 westbound near Maitland Avenue. The notification indicated that the registered owner of the vehicle, Patrick Rooney, 60, was driving under suspension.

Upon stopping the vehicle, officers quickly suspected that Rooney might be under the influence of alcohol. Following standard procedure, a roadside screening device was employed, which confirmed the officers’ suspicions. Rooney was then transported to the Ottawa Detachment for further testing.

As a result of these findings, Rooney now faces multiple charges, including:

  1. Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

  2. Driving while under suspension

  3. Driving a motor vehicle without a valid permit

In addition to the charges, Rooney’s driving privileges have been suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle has been impounded for a period of seven days. He is scheduled to appear in an Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa at a later date.

This incident underscores the crucial role of ALPR technology in enhancing public safety on the roads. The OPP’s proactive measures and use of innovative tools are vital in the fight against impaired driving, which remains a serious issue across the province.

As Canadians, it is essential to recognize the risks associated with impaired driving, not only for the driver but also for everyone on the road. The OPP’s efforts to enforce traffic laws and deter dangerous behaviours reflect a commitment to ensuring safer communities for all Ontarians.

This case serves as a reminder that driving is a privilege that comes with responsibilities. Drivers are encouraged to stay informed about their driving status and to make responsible choices behind the wheel to protect themselves and others.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the community will be watching closely, hoping that this incident prompts further discussions about road safety and the importance of adhering to traffic laws in Ottawa and beyond.
