Guelph Resident Charged with Stunt Driving Near Fergus School
In a concerning incident that underscores the importance of road safety, an 18-year-old resident of Guelph has been charged with stunt driving after being caught speeding nearly double the posted limit near a busy school in Fergus, Ontario. The charges were laid by the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) as part of their ongoing traffic enforcement initiatives.
The incident took place on September 13, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m. While conducting a proactive traffic enforcement operation, officers observed a vehicle travelling at an alarming speed on Scotland Street, which prompted them to initiate a traffic stop. The young driver was clocked going 49 km/h over the posted limit, a serious violation that raises significant safety concerns, especially in proximity to schools.
As a result of the investigation, the Guelph resident now faces charges under the Highway Traffic Act that include:
-
Speeding 1 - 49 km/h over the posted limit
-
Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt
The penalties for stunt driving in Ontario are stringent. Anyone charged with this offence automatically faces a 14-day vehicle impoundment and a 30-day driver’s licence suspension. These measures are in place to deter reckless driving behaviour, particularly in areas where children are present, such as school zones.
The accused is scheduled to appear in Guelph’s provincial offences court at a later date to answer the charges. This incident not only serves as a wake-up call for young drivers but also reinforces the critical role of law enforcement in maintaining safety on our roads.
With the return to school, it is crucial for all drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to speed limits, especially in high-traffic areas. The OPP continues to emphasize the need for drivers to exercise caution and respect road rules to ensure the safety of all community members.
As the season progresses, the Wellington County OPP will likely continue their proactive enforcement efforts, aiming to curb dangerous driving behaviours and promote safer roads for everyone.
