Fergus Resident Charged for Multiple Traffic Violations After OPP Stop

In a notable enforcement action, a 46-year-old resident of Fergus is facing several charges stemming from a proactive traffic stop conducted by the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The incident, which took place on September 17, 2025, in Centre Wellington Township, underscores the OPP’s commitment to road safety and responsible driving.

At approximately 1:15 p.m. on that Tuesday afternoon, members of the OPP Traffic Management Unit were actively engaging in traffic enforcement when they stopped a vehicle on St David Street North in Fergus. The stop was part of an initiative aimed at enhancing road safety and ensuring compliance with provincial laws.

During the investigation, police discovered that the driver was operating the vehicle without valid insurance, a serious infraction that can lead to significant penalties and is a concern for all road users. In addition to this charge, the driver was found to have no currently validated permit for the vehicle, failed to produce a valid driver’s licence, and did not surrender the permit for the vehicle.

As a result of these violations, the Fergus resident has been charged under both the Highway Traffic Act and the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act. The specific charges include:

  • Operating a motor vehicle without insurance

  • Driving a motor vehicle without a currently validated permit

  • Failing to surrender a driver’s licence

  • Failing to surrender a permit for the motor vehicle

These charges highlight the importance of having appropriate documentation and insurance when operating a vehicle in Ontario, as well as the potential consequences for neglecting these responsibilities. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Provincial Offences Court in Guelph to address these charges at a later date.

The OPP encourages all drivers to adhere to traffic laws, not only for their own safety but for the safety of all road users. They also remind the public that if they suspect someone is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they should report it immediately by calling 911.

This incident serves as a reminder to all Ontario drivers that staying informed about and compliant with traffic regulations is crucial for maintaining road safety in our communities. With the increasing number of vehicles on the road, it’s more important than ever for drivers to ensure they have valid insurance and permits, thus contributing to a safer driving environment across the province.
